Atari Computer Orchestra (ca. 50 x 1040 ST)

  1. For each computer 3 Power plugs of 220 volts are required. The consumption of one is about 150 watts.

  2. 60 x 60 cm ground space is needed to set up one computer.

  3. The classical orchestra emulation works best in halls with a natural reverb, but can be amplified by microphones or lineout-signal.

  4. Each computer works as an individual musical instrument, that can reproduce one tone dynamically over 4 octaves with 10 different sounds. They are produced in real-time and reproduced by the 1 Watt loudspeaker that is built-in in the monitor.

  5. The master-computer is the director as it keeps all the musical data in his sequencing program, and hands it out via midi to the instrument-computers. (Just like classical orchestra work).

  6. The instrument-computers receive midi messages, such as note on/off, volume and program change from the master-computer, which he takes from the score of the piece in his RAM that is being played.

  7. The computers can be positioned like in a classical orchestra by instrument groups, or set up in any order as far as the midi cables allow it.

  8. The basic file types that are being used by the orchestra are midi files, they have to be extracted and adjusted for the instrument-computers.
The repertoire spans from renaissance to contemporary composers.

  9. There is also a sample program that allows 32 different sound samples to be played in 4 voices in 8 bit / 22KHz.

  10. This is in use in following project.
